A Message from Shaun
Corbin & Associates has served law enforcement agencies across the nation in training School Resource Officers (SRO) since 1995. My name is Shaun Shepherd and as an instructor in numerous SRO courses for more than 15 years with the company, I now have the honor and privilege of assuming the primary instructor and business leadership role. For those that might not know me, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee and I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. I have worked with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) in Chattanooga, Tennessee for more than 34 years. I had the privilege of serving in our Corrections and Patrol Divisions prior to my 6 years as the SRO at Chattanooga Central High School. I also worked for 4 years as a team supervisor within our Patrol Division. I was later assigned as the Youth & Community Division Commander, which included administrating the SRO Division and Homeland Security and Community Awareness Coordinator. My responsibilities in this role over a 14-year period involved redeveloping our SRO program from scratch, and building it to a full division. This now consists of a supervising team with a captain, lieutenant and three sergeants, along with 32 SROs serving 30 middle and high school campuses across our community. Additionally, I had the opportunity to lead our Emergency Operations Center and ICS teams. This allowed our division to conduct numerous safety drills, citizen active shooter preparedness training sessions, and perform vulnerability assessments at local businesses, churches, plus public and private schools and universities. I currently serve as the Deputy Chief of Corrections where I lead a division of more than 200 HCSO sworn and civilian personnel. I look forward to working with you in the future as we prepare our law enforcement officers and deputies to serve our children as law enforcement advocates, life advisors, classroom presenters and as role models for their lives.
the TRIAD+1 Approach
Law Enforcement
The SRO is a law enforcement officer first. They are the protector of their school. Their law enforcement role differs from that of a patrol officer in that the SRO's have a daily relationship with the citizens they serve and one that continues after each encounter.
Instructor
SRO's should visit classrooms to make presentations of a law-related topics. They should also be available as a resource for teachers in developing programs tailored to specific units of study. Through classroom instruction the students gain a better understanding of the police and the importance of laws to a society.
Advisor
Through our instruction, each officer is trained to conduct informal, individual and group discussions. SRO's should always make themselves available for conferences with students, parents and faculty members regarding law-related issues and crime prevention techniques. SRO's should also be familiar with local and state social services and community resources that are available for referral.
Mentor (+1)
When the triad roles of Law Enforcement, Instructor and Advisor are utilized to their fullest potential, then the relationships the SRO builds with the students create a true mentor for the youth of their communities.
Our Team
Our team consists of both current and retired members of the Law Enforcement community that served as school resource officers and have a passion for not only keeping kids safe, but in helping the youth of our communities make better decisions.
